The sisters — Serena seeded seventeenth and Venus sixteenth — played each other in the third round of the Grand Slam competition. Serena, 36, beat out Venus, 38, with 2-0 in sets and will now proceed onward to the round of 16.

“It is difficult,” Serena said of beating her older sibling Venus in a meeting after the match. “She’s my closest companion, she means everything to me. She’s so steady of my profession and I’m amazingly strong of her vocation and each time she loses I have an inclination that I do. No doubt, it’s not simple, but rather it’s a competition and we as a whole realize that there’s something else entirely to life than simply playing each other and playing tennis.”
